October 2011

Wow, I cannot believe October 2011 is almost gone.  October has been a fun, but very busy month; with all of the parties and traditions we've started as a family, I'm glad it's October 31st.

We started off the month with one of my favorite Sgarlata-Lehtinen family traditions, visiting Eberts pumpkin patch.  It was such a beautiful and hot, in the high 70's, day.  We got there right after it opened which was a very smart idea since the crowds grew exponentially every hour we were there.  Since the kids were 2 years old they also could go on a lot more activities than last year.  They enjoyed the new, exciting bouncy bounce games, feeding the goats, the hay-slide, and of course the familiar activities, the hay ride, big bouncy slide, and corn maze.  This year we picked out the pumpkins for the three kiddos instead of letting them pick, because time got away from us this year.  However, I personally think we picked the perfect pumpkins and to this day, they haven't been touched by a squirrel or other animal, thanks to some hot sauce coating we applied to the pumpkins when we got home.   All in all, a wonderful day as a family of five!!

Next in the month, were the twins' birthday party and Piper Caroline's baptism.  We initially had the twins' birthday party scheduled on their real b-day, the 2nd of October, but our house was sick with croup, so we had to reschedule.  We decided that having the baptism and the birthday party on the same day would be easiest for people traveling and on Jonathan and I's sanity.  Looking back, we were crazy to have them on two separate days with how much work it was getting ready for their parties and the fact that the boys were not interested in having a party or opening up presents.  I'm sure that will change with age. :)

Even with the twins' disinterest in their party, both their birthday party and Piper's baptism were wonderful events.  We chose to have Piper's baptism at the earlier service since their was another baptism at the later service, plus it allowed for us to eat and open up gifts before the kiddos crashed for nap times.  Now picking the earlier service made sense in theory, but having to get up really early to clean, finish cooking, give baths, take a shower, and get the house, you, and your family ready to be out the door by 8:30 was a lot of work.  We somehow managed and got there on time.  Now a little background, Piper is an EXTREMELY laid back, easy, baby; barely cries, and lets anyone hold her.  During her baptism however, she wanted to eat, cried more than normal, and squirmed like crazy in Sarah's (Aunt and Godmother) arms and managed to kick off one of her gorgeous sparkly shoes.  Not very characteristic of her, but most importantly she received God's grace and is a child in God's Kingdom. AMEN!

Lastly, our block was lucky to be picked as the 'Haunted Block' of our neighborhood association's Halloween trick or treat route.  I spear headed the event and worked as the liaison between my neighbors and the association, which ended up being more work than I planned, but isn't that how it always works out. :)  Even with all the work, I personally think we had an amazing Haunted Block, but I am a little biased.  One thing is for sure, Jonathan and I had the best Haunted Block display.  I'm not just saying that, but everyone was taking pictures and telling us that what we did was so funny and unique.  "You guys won for sure" was quoted by a few people, even though there wasn't a Haunted decorating contest.  What everyone was looking at was a genius decorating theme thought up by J and me.  We decided to do a funny switched roles theme with a deer and a hunter.  We had a deer sitting in a tree stand with a bow and area on his lap shooting a hunter down below in our truck.  We put an arrow threw the hunter, had the truck crash into some hay bales and had the hood smoking.  It was really funny!!!

As for our costumes, J and I were high schoolers, sporting our letter man jackets, the twins were monkeys, and Piper was a pea in the pod.  Piper barely fit into her costume and managed to kick her feet out of the 'pod'.  A far cry from when the twins wore the same costume, they were swimming in it.  The twins' were so cute in their monkey costumes, which had signs, saying "monkey see, monkey do", which is so true to their personalities.

The Halloween night when by so fast; with 1200-1500 trick or treaters and having a bon fire in the front yard, We enjoyed passing out candy while staying warm by the fire and spending time with friends and family.  Everyone said we should do the same thing next year and I think we just might do that.

So as you can see, October has been fun and busy.  Looking forward to saying Good bye to October 2011 and Hello, to November 2011!
